Manchester United have named former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season.
The Norwegian scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for the Red Devils, most memorably hitting the winner in Champions League final that completed United’s famous treble 20 years ago.
Of his appointment, Solskjaer says: “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role.
“I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”
Solskjaer comes in place of Jose Mourinho after the Special One was sacked with United down in the sixth in the Premier League – 19 points off the top and 11 outside the top four.
Nicknamed the Baby-faced Assassin during his 11-year spell at Old Trafford, he will be helped Mike Phelan as first-team coach, Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.
His first assignment will be Saturday’s trip to Cardiff, who he led to Premier League relegation in 2014 in his first managerial stint in English football.
Reports claim that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is United’s number one target to take the reins on a permanent basis next season.
He is apparently facing competition from Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane.
