BENJAMIN Sesko has agreed to join Manchester United, placing the club in a strong position to sign the RB Leipzig striker.
The 22-year-old has turned down interest from Newcastle United, despite the Magpies having a £78 million (R1.9 billion) bid accepted by Leipzig.
United now lead the race, with all parties aware of Sesko’s preference for a move to Old Trafford, as first reported by The Athletic.
Personal terms with United are not expected to be an obstacle, bringing their striker search close to completion.
United have tracked Sesko since his teenage years at Slovenian club Domzale and have reignited their interest after previously monitoring Arsenal’s pursuit of the forward. The Gunners eventually opted for Viktor Gyokeres, a former Ruben Amorim player at Sporting.
Newcastle, missing out on yet another top target, may now turn their attention to Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. Villa’s £60m valuation and Watkins’ age (29) made the Red Devils reluctant to pursue him.
Newcastle’s need for a striker has intensified, with star forward Alexander Isak reportedly seeking a move away. Liverpool are rumoured to be preparing a second offer for Isak.
Sesko’s anticipated arrival could prompt a reshuffle in United’s attack. Rasmus Hojlund, after two swak seasons, is available for transfer at just £30m.
Sesko would join new attacking signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as part of a restructured frontline.
If completed, Sesko’s signing would be a groot statement by United, who look set to land one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards.
