Despite beating the Blue Bulls with a bonus point in one rain-interrupted half at Loftus on Saturday, Western Province coach John Dobson says his team won’t underestimate their opponents in Saturday’s Newlands reverse.
WP comfortably won the north-south derby 34-7 in a match that was stopped at half-time because of bad weather to seal top spot during the round-robin phase of the Currie Cup, setting up a Newlands semifinal this weekend.
Dobson, though, believes the Pretoria outfit couldn’t handle the weather conditions and will be better in Cape Town this coming weekend.
He says: “What we wanted to do is make a statement and maybe some of our play created that.
“This is a special group and they definitely won’t be complacent [against the Bulls at Newlands].
“We are well aware that conditions favoured us - we’ve got experience [in these conditions] and some of their blokes made mistakes from minute one.”
Of the dominant win, Dobson adds: “We are absolutely thrilled, we knew we had to get four tries and to do that before half time in those conditions was exceptional.”
One area in which WP dominated big time was the scrums, of which Dobson says: “We heard some rumours in the week that they were going to target Wilco [Louw].
“Even if it was untrue, he was an angry big diesel engine that ran onto the field.”
