Champions League winners Luka Modric and Cristiano
Ronaldo of Real Madrid, and Mohammed Salah from finalists Liverpool
have been nominated for the 2017-18 UEFA Player of the Year award,
the European governing body said on Monday.
Modric and Ronaldo were in the Real team that beat Liverpool 3-1 in
Kiev in May for a third straight title in the elite evnt.
Modric also reached the World Cup final with Croatia and was named
best player of the tournament in Russia. Portugal's Ronaldo, now at
Italian champions Juventus, was Champions League top scorer a sixth
straight year.
The shortlist was created in the vote among the 80 coaches from the
Champions League and Europa League group stage teams. The winner will
be named on August 30 during the 2018-19 group stage draw.
Candidates for the Europa League best player award are Diego Godin
and Antoine Griezmann from winners Atletico Madrid, and Dimitri Payet
from runners-up Olympique Marseille.
The women's shortlist is made of Champions League winners Ada
Hegerberg and Amandine Henry from Champions League winners Lyon, and
Pernille Harder from finalists Wolfsburg.
