Manchester United left Anfield last night still at the top of the Premier League after a goalless draw with champions Liverpool, who are without a win in four games.
In a game of few chances, both teams walked away from this clash with long-running streaks intact – as United stayed unbeaten on the road for a year and the Reds’ unbeaten home streak entering its fourth year.
Despite the Reds dominating possession in the first half, they failed to cause any real damage and now lie third in the league after failing to score in three straight games.
Firmino got the first genuine sight of goal when he was set up by Sadio Mane in the 17th minute, but his shot with his weaker left foot went wide with David de Gea flatfooted in United’s goal.
The visitors also put Alisson on notice in the 32nd minute when Bruno Fernandes’ freekick whistled just wide of the goal, before Firmino became the first man to hit the target when he shot straight at De Gea.
In the second half, Liverpool’s pressure amounted to little in the final third as United continued to play on the counter.
Harry Maguire did well to block shots from Firmino and Mo Salah, before Fernandes twice tested Alisson in the Reds’ goal as the game moved into its final 20 minutes.
Alisson was called into action again in the 83rd minute by Paul Pogba, who drilled hard and low from 12 yards out in a stalemate.
