British and Irish Lions legend Willie John McBride has added his voice to a petition to stop organisers from rescheduling the team’s series against South Africa in the UK.
With the Covid-19 pandemic threatening to derail this year’s Lions tour to South Africa, organisers are apparently looking at staging the event in the UK.
But a petition by Lions fans launched last week to rather move the series, which is scheduled to start in June, to 2022 instead of hosting it in the UK, has already received close to 4 000 signatures.
McBride, who captained the Lions to a 3-0 series win over the Springboks in 1974, believes it will be a disgrace if the series is moved to the UK.
The 80-year-old former second-row forward tells the
“It would be a disgrace. It will defeat everything the Lions stand for.
“It is not a Lions tour, or a Lions concept of any sorts to play anything here in the home countries.
“You have to play it in South Africa. In my view they should postpone it until next year”.
