Stellenbosch boss Steve Barker is demanding more from his new signings when they face off against PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns tomorrow evening.
The manne from the Boland won their first game of the new campaign last week – a 2-0 win over Chippa United at the Danie Craven Stadium.
It was also their first victory at their new home, boosting the feel-good factor.
And to give them even more gees, the second goal was scored by Argentinian winger Junior Mendieta in his first start for the club.
Barker says: “It’s nice to get that first win of the season under the belt – it gives confidence and momentum to take into the next game.
“I’m very pleased with the progress they’ve shown from the short pre-season they have had with us. So we’re looking forward to more positive input from the new guys.”
With a goal for the pluck, Mendieta reveals he is ready to knuckle down to improve his performances after impressing the coach and finding his range in South African football.
The 27-year-old says: “I’m very happy to be in Stellenbosch. It’s a very nice club – very organised – that wants to grow and I think is doing very well little by little.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to open the door and trying to improve to the maximum everything.”
The boss, though, is under no illusions about how tough the champions away is going to be.
Barker adds: “Sundowns is always the ultimate test in this league.
“And they have the chance to go back to the top of the league, so it will be a big challenge for us.”
