JP Duminy will lead the Proteas in their final match of their tour of Sri Lanka on Tuesday at 3.30pm.
The 34-year-old Capetonian will become the third captain on the South Africans’ tour after Quinton de Kock guided the team to two defeats in the ODI series after winning the first three matches.
South Africa, though, already wrapped up the series win 3-0 before captain Faf du Plessis injured his shoulder and was ruled out for the remainder of the tour.
Duminy, who retired from Test cricket in 2017, joined the SA squad at the start of the ODI series and he hit the ground running, with his unbeaten 53 off only 32 balls helping the team to a five-wicket win in the first ODI.
Koppe then scored 32 off 29 balls in the second ODI as SA won by four wickets, before blasting 92 in the third match to seal the series.
And the man handing over the captain’s armband to Duminy, Quinton de Kock, believes the Capetonian will inspire the troops to a tour win.
Of Duminy, De Kock says: “JP has come into the series with a free mindset, it has worked well for him.
“He is also offloading that mindset onto the team, he is leading the boys well from a batting, bowling and fielding perspective, he is an allround unit.
“It is great to have him with us in the mood that he is, he will be a big part of our team going forward.”
No more T20 specialists were added to the squad.
