Part-time spin bowler Joe Root spun the Proteas in a web at St George’s Park on Sunday.
Taking 4/19, England captain Root and his team now only need four more wickets to take a 2-1 series lead in the final day of the the third Test today.
As for the Proteas, they will be praying for rain to get a result in the match.
With the weather gurus predicting a 40 percent chance of showers today, it is South Africa’s best bet to enter the final match of the series at the Wanderers still with a chance to win it.
Judging by how things went on Sunday, though, they will have to produce a miraculous turnaround to do so.
Entering the day on 208/6 in reply to England’s 499/9 declared, South Africa lost their last four wickets for just one run.
Forced to follow on, the Proteas could only amass 102 runs and lost six wickets in the process, with Root getting the scalps of Pieter Malan (12), Faf du Plessis (36), Rassie van der Dussen (10) and Quinton de Kock (3).
With England needing four wickets for the win and South Africa needing to bat out the day, it will be lower-order batsmen Vernon Philander (3*) and Keshav Maharaj (0*) that will ask for guard when play resumes today.
