Nuno Espirito Santo blasted the refereeing blunder that probably cost Wolves a Europa League semifinal against Manchester United.
Wolves were knocked out by Sevilla 1-0, thanks to an 88th-minute Lucas Ocampos header in Duisburg on Tuesday night.
But the drama started early in the night, when Mexican striker Raul Jimenez agonisingly missed his first spotkick for the club, after Adama Traore sprinted over 60 metres before being fouled in the 12th minute.
VAR replays showed Sevilla goalkeeper Bono off his line before he saved Jimenez’s effort and defender Diego Carlos also appeared to have encroached before clearing the loose ball.
And Wolves boss Espirito Santo is kwaad that they never got the retake.
He says: “VAR is there. If that happens, we should ask ourselves why they didn’t [re-take] it. There’s nothing we can do now.
“It is one fine detail that will make us even sadder about it. Speaking about that now can only make us more frustrated than we already are.”
It brings to an end a marathon season for Wolves, who played 59 games, before falling short of a first European semifinal in 48 years.
The coach adds: “We wanted to go as far as we could. We came really close.
“Everyone is disappointed but we should not ignore the effort of the players.
“It’s 14 months of hard work - in the Europa League and the Premier League - and we’ve achieved good things.”
In the other quarterfinal clash on Tuesday, Shakhtar Donetsk klapped FC Basel 4-1 to book a place semifinal berth against Inter Milan on Monday night.
