Former German Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has
been detained on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca after an
incident on the property of German actor and director Til Schweiger.
German tabloid Bild reported that the former pro-cyclist climbed over
a fence to enter Schweiger's property uninvited on Friday. Ullrich's
lawyer, Wolfgang Hoppe, confirmed to dpa on Saturday that an incident
had occurred but did not provide any details.
According to Bild, there was a physical altercation and police took
Ullrich away in handcuffs.
Hoppe said he did not know whether the altercation had been physical
or verbal. He was also unable to say if Ullrich was still in police
custody on Saturday or if he was in hospital as he had been unable to
speak to him.
Bild quoted Schweiger as saying: "I can confirm that that there was
an incident with my neighbour Jan. This is not how I had imagined my
holiday."
One of the actor's publicity agents also confirmed to dpa that the
incident had taken place.
Ullrich won the Tour de France in 1997 and was later linked with the
doping scandal involving Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes in 2006,
prompting his retirement from cycling.
He was retroactively banned for two years in 2012 and subsequently
admitted to doping.
