The Cape Cobras’ 4-Day Series title chase is at the mercy of the weather gods as they lost more play to bad light on Wednesday.
Day Two, just like the opening day, was shortened by dark clouds as rain threatened on another hot and humid day in Pietermaritzburg.
The Cobras trail the Dolphins by 65 runs in the first innings with the Newlands side on 245/3.
The hosts resumed yesterday on 293/6 before Vernon Philander, wicketless on Day One, chopped off the tail, taking all four remaining scalps to leave the hosts on 306.
Simon Khomari and Pieter Malan started the chase, but the former was out for 14 with 29 the total for the first wicket.
Proteas Test batsman Zubayr Hamza then joined the opener and led the charge.
Malan and Hamza lifted the score to 92 before Malan was out six runs short of his half century.
But Hamza kept going and, aided by Daniel Bedingham (37) and Kyle Verryenne (41*), brought up his first hundred of the tournament.
Hamza will have to build on his unbeaten 104 once the clouds clear on Wednesday.
