Cape Cobras skipper Dane Piedt hailed his team’s game breakers as they look to maintain their perfect start to the 4-Day Series campaign.
Heading into their fifth match - hosting second-placed Lions on Tuesday- the Newlanders have won all four of their matches to top the table and enjoy a moerse33-point lead.
The Cobras had to dig deep to beat the Dolphins last week and had seamer Dane Paterson’s career-best 6/63 to help win the match after first-innings tons by Pieter Malan and Vernon Philander.
And Piedt tells IOL: “I couldn’t be more proud of the boys. We have won games from different positions, which was a really pleasing thing for me.
“There were moments in the game that stand out, we had two hundreds and two five-fors, but it was a complete team performance.
“There are moments when people need to crack the game open, and that’s what they did. I have just been so proud how we have responded to it.”
The Cobras are hoping the newcomers to the team also make regular contributions.
He adds: “Our middle-order is made up of [Zubayr] Hamza, [Daniel] Bedingham, [Kyle] Verreynne, [Aviwe] Mgijima... all young cricketers in first-class cricket.
“But again, it shows they are capable of doing it. There will be speed bumps in their careers, but that’s part and parcel of the profession we chose.
“Again, they are not youngsters, but young stars. In my eyes, every one of them can go up and play for higher honours.”
