Cape Town City chairman John Comitis used the club’s first in-person media conference since Covid-19 on Wednesday to slam City of Cape Town chiefs for not helping them find a home.
City’s PSL fixture against Orlando Pirates this Saturday has been moved from Cape Town Stadium to the Danie Craven Stadium due to a VW car launch.
And he feels dis ’n nog n klap innie gesig to the club and football in general, with Western Province moving into the Fifa 2010 World Cup venue at the start of the next rugby season.
Comitis says: “The stadium has become a serious issue for me. No football team in South Africa controls its own stadium.
“And while we had eight new stadiums built for the World Cup in 2010, not one is the anchor of a local football club. That should have gone hand in hand then.
“As we speak, rugby has signed a 100-year lease. To me it’s a crime.
“Not that we don’t want to cooperate with other sports, but when we are pleading to the City to help us build our own stadium and having met with the mayor [Dan Plato]... two years later we’re still stumbling.
“Why is there so much willingness for rugby and cricket?”
Comitis says he is waiting to hear from the mayor about their plans to develop Hartleyvale, their training base, into a match venue.
He says: “I’ve requested another meeting with the mayor and I’m waiting for feedback.
“Ultimately we want to be in our new home in three years.”
