This after leaders Wits and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns both won their games yesterday.
On Friday, City shrugged off their shock 1-0 defeat at Maritzburg United, by beating Free State Stars by the same scoreline at Cape Town Stadium.
Wits edged Maritzburg 1-0 thanks to a Phumlani Ntshangase goal in the 56th minute, putting them three points above Downs.
The Brazilians got back to winning ways after dropping points on Thursday to Platinum Stars in 2-2 draw with a 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates.
Khama Billiat opened the scoring for the Brazilians in the 25th minute, before Yannick Zakri put Pitso Mosimane’s defending champions two up early in the second half.
The top two’s results left City boss Eric Tinkler looking to cement third in table with another tough test coming up for the PSL newcomers at SuperSport tomorrow night (7.30pm).
Tinkler insisted that he was focused on his team finishing the season in third place. He wasn’t thinking about the title because, with three games to go, it was out of their hands.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder says: “We were sitting in third earlier in the week and that is our target.
“That has to be the target because it is within our reach. To finish any higher, we would have to depend on both Wits and Sundowns dropping points. But for us to finish third, as I always say, would be a phenomenal achievement.
“There are, of course, no easy fixtures, but I think Wits have the momentum. They are the in-form team.
“Sundowns haven’t been that great with regard to form in recent games, but their quality and experience will always allow them to grind out results.”
