Hugo Broos says he is not bang to rebuild Bafana Bafana with younger players.
The Belgian coach gave his first big interview yesterday morning after arriving in the country on Monday and he is ready to get to work to identify the players he needs to make Bafana Bafana great again.
The 2017 African Cup of Nations winner with Cameroon told the SABC yesterday: “I’m not afraid of the huge job that’s waiting for me.
“We have to work pretty hard – not just me, but the players too. With hard work we can achieve many things.
“We have an old team –many players over 30. But it’s not about ‘old’ players – otherwise you can’t select [Cristiano] Ronaldo or [Lionel] Messi. You have to renew your team.”
Broos says he will start his search for new faces when he meets his South African assistant – who will be unveiled by Safa today – by looking in the PSL and abroad.
He also dropped a massive hint that Macedonian coach Cedomir Janevski will join his backroom staff as they look to ahead to 2022 World Cup qualifiers, when they tackle Zimbabwe, Ghana and Ethiopia in Group G after the campaign’s kickoff was moved from next month to September due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Broos adds: “My project is to try to get to the World Cup next year. It will be tough, it will be difficult. But then the next Afcon, we have to be there. No excuses.
“We are in a group with all our opponents going to Afcon. It will be tough.
“I think this country needs a very big victory to be seen as a big nation of football.
“And once SA win the Afcon or be at the World Cup, it would be great.”
