Back speen: Boks face huge selection poser

Voice Sports Team|Published

YOUNG GUN: Aphelele Fassi

The Springboks’ selectors had to krap kop hard on Monday with regards to picking their back three for Saturday’s Test against Scotland at Murrayfield.

With fullback Damian Willemse all but ruled out for the clash after suffering a concussion in their 23-18 win over Wales last weekend, coach Jacques Nienaber and his selection panel now have to decide whether they’ll select Frans Steyn, who replaced Willemse and won the Man of the Match award against Wales, veteran Willie le Roux, who was rotated with Willemse for the match, or Aphelele Fassi, another youngster in the group looking for a start, in the No.15 jumper.

The obvious choice would be to start the experienced Le Roux, keep Steyn on the bench and start Fassi at right wing, where he could replace Jesse Kriel, who failed to take his chance in this position last week in the absence of Sbu Nkosi.

OPTION: Veteran Willie le Roux

Maar daar is nog ’n curveball, Nkosi is now available again after sorting out his visa issues and has joined up with the side on Sunday, leaving the selectors with a helse kopseer.

Assistant coach Deon Davids says: “With Damian out, the debate will be around Willie [le Roux], Frans Steyn after his good performance on the weekend and a guy like Aphelele Fassie will be discussed as well – whether it is as a 15 or wing. We will base our decision on what the team needs on Saturday.”

MAN OF THE MOMENT: Steyn

The Boks will name their team at 1.30pm today.
