LIMITED USE: Andile Phehlukwayo
Reduced to a tourist in South Africa’s recent T20I series victory in the West Indies, unused Andile Phehlukwayo has a point to prove in the series against Ireland.
The 25-year-old allrounder wants to be a regular feature in the Proteas limited-overs side and says the only way to get back to his best and to prove he belongs is to spend some time in the middle.
Phehlukwayo was back in the mix in the rained-out first ODI against Ireland on Monday, finishing with bowling figures of 1/39 in seven overs as Ireland got to 195/4 before umpires called off the game.
Ahead of today’s second ODI at 11.45am, Phehlukwayo says: “I felt a little bit rusty [in the first match], but it’s good to be out there. The more you play, the better you get.
“It’s about being on the field as long as possible.”
With SA chasing Super League points in order to book their place at the next World Cup, Phehlukwayo says they want results and not rained-out matches.
He adds: “It’s important to take these wins – we need to make sure we’re clinical in each performance. Every point and game counts and we’ve got to remind ourselves that we’re building towards a bigger cause.”
