GOING ALONE: Ari Efstathiou

Ajax Cape Town are no more after cutting ties with Ajax Amsterdam last night.

Cape Town Stars, the South African minority shareholder of Ajax Cape Town, yesterday reached an agreement to take full control from Ajax Amsterdam.

The relationship between Ikamva management, led by Ari Efstathiou, and the Dutch has been under strain for a number of years, coming to a head earlier this year when Dutch coach Andries Ulderink and head of football Hans Vonk left after an ugly episode.

A club statement reads: “Cape Town Stars, the 49 percent shareholder of Ajax Cape Town, is pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement to acquire the 51 percent share of the franchise from Ajax Amsterdam with effect from 1October. After 21 years of partnership with their Dutch counterparts, Cape Town Stars will be acquiring full control of the club.”

The Cape Town Stars bosses are reportedly also looking to buy a PSL status to return to SA’s top flight after missing out through the promotion playoffs.
