Last week’s landmark Constitutional Court ruling must have certainly taken the wind out of the sails of a few politicians.
Just to be clear, there are definitely still many Jacob Zuma sympathisers in our government and this ruling took square aim at them as well.
The court ruled that the country’s top prosecutor Shaun Abrahams was appointed unconstitutionally by Zuma and he should clean out his office immediately.
It turns out Abrahams’ predecessor Mxolisi Nxasana was first hounded, and then paid-off to vacate the job so Abrahams could take over.
This is truly explosive stuff and probably the clearest indication yet of a renewed vigour to scrub the state apparatus clean of Zuma’s corruption legacy.
Further evidence of this is the man himself - Accused Number One is back in court in November for corruption, although this ruling is unlikely to have any impact on his trial.
His jet-setting son Duduzane is also back in court in January, to face separate corruption charges.
Meanwhile, at least one Gupta - a nephew of the infamous brothers - is facing justice, along with several others in connection with corruption at a dairy farm in the Free State.
That has turned out to be such a slap in the face for us tax payers.
Money meant to uplift small dairy farmers allegedly ended up in Gupta accounts, some of which was used for that lavish Sun City wedding which also compromised our national security at the Waterkloof Airforce Base.
In any case, Zuma’s house of cards is tumbling down and everything many of us suspected for so long, is finally coming to light.
It would be really nice to see the three main Gupta brothers being prosecuted as well.
They are abroad and I don’t think we will see them willingly return soon. Nevertheless, this is all great for national morale, as it is about time we see justice being done.
It seems all it took was to tackle the country’s chief prosecutor to ensure the office is indeed independent.
The ConCourt ruling also directly answers a question I asked in a previous article: “How is it that there are so many credible accusations against Zuma and the Guptas, and yet no arrests and prosecutions?”
Now we know!
