When it comes to events like these, it’s always more colourful when you get the inside track. Knowing this, Bobby Nitro spoke to Drift City media man Jason Williams about who’s doing what and why in Drift City 2018. Jason says: “The man to watch will be Isak van Zyl, after he came second in both previous years, missing top spot by inches and both times as a result of his own mistake. He nudged a cone on the final run in both cases and this year he is coming back with a faster, better set-up vehicle.
“Isak jokes that this time it will be third time lucky. The crowd loves him, but remember he’ll be up against the V8 powerhouse of Otto Graven.”
We can only assume that Isak has a point to prove this time around.
Then there are the out of town and new drivers, all capable contenders. There could be some surprises here. Jason says: “It will be interesting to see what the new blood brings.
“The Joburg contingent, what we call the Storm from the North, are bringing some V8 Nissan 350zs, and these are skilled competitors who know the Cape Town drivers, but not on this format. We have female driver Clare Vale coming down, who is an accomplished driver. We’re not sure whether she’s bringing her crowd favourite Mustang or the niftier Subaru BRZ.”
Jason ends with an encouraging message for all participants, which echoes the spirit of drift: “You know what they say, if you can’t do well, at least look good.”
