There are some very smart people around the world feverishly working on a vaccine for the novel Coronavirus.
In fact, there has never before been such a massive global effort aimed at achieving the same result.
More than 200 laboratories around the world are hoping to crack this thing and be the first to give the world a vaccine.
That being said, a worrisome undertone is rearing its ugly head; the possibility that the world’s richest nations would buy-up the vaccine first, leaving the rest of us waiting in the wings.
There have already been more than five billion pre-orders of a possible vaccine, made mostly by rich countries.
One French company got into trouble for suggesting that it would sell a vaccine to the USA first, since that’s where it got its financing from.
It’s such a worrying development that even the Pope has spoken out against the wealthy getting a vaccine and leaving the world’s poor unable to be immunised.
The other worry is that a possible Covid-19 vaccine has become so politicised now, that its existence may prove to cause humanity more harm than good.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin surprised the world recently by announcing that they in fact already have a working vaccine.
Merely by nicknaming it Sputnik 5, he showed that he is more interested in the bragging rights of having gotten their first.
The name is a throw-back to Russia having beaten America to be the first nation to put a satellite - Sputnik 1 - in orbit in 1957.
Putin understands how much winning means to US President Donald Trump, and knows how winning this race would both bother and impress him.
Meanwhile, Trump’s determination to get a vaccine through his “Operation Warp Speed” appears to be less an attempt to save the world’s population, and more part of his plans for a second presidential term.
Trump can, of course, do with a bit of good news ahead of the November elections, and what better news can there be, than a Covid-19 vaccine.
Which is why his administration has already pumped billions into vaccine research.
Also eager to stick it to Trump, China has entered the race, with news that the country is testing a vaccine on some of its soldiers.
The implications are that China is doing it both forcibly, and to save face with the world for having been the epicentre of Covid-19.
All of this sounds great on the surface, but experts agree that any attempt to roll out a vaccine without proper evidence that it works, could be very harmful.
This is yet another danger of having narcissistic world leaders.
I just hope that underneath it all Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping care enough about humanity to not play with our lives on such a global scale.
