Like many of you, I had such a good laugh when the president struggled with his mask last week, briefly putting it over his eyes.
The memes, including mine, were almost immediate.
But I was surprised to see how many people took exception on his behalf.
Many people thought the comments were cruel, unkind and that he didn’t deserve being mocked because he was doing such an exceptional job.
I found myself writing lengthy explanations on Facebook to help them understand the difference between laughing at and laughing with.
And also how we often tease the people we love the most.
But many of them would have none of it.
That’s until Ramaphosa himself addressed the “mask incident” the following day, proving that you can be a serious statesman, tackling an unprecedented crisis that’s clearly taking it out of you and still have a great sense of humour.
He went up a good couple of notches in my estimation.
