Don’t let them tell you that Kaizer Chiefs’ exit at the hands of Richards Bay was the biggest thing to happen in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
The headlines here by us belong to Cape Town City’s Tashreeq Morris because he scored a hattrick, papa.
He scored one with his head, two with his feet and even provided the assist for captain Thabo Nodada for the fourth goal as the Citizens demolished last season’s finalists 4-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Citizens march on and can start believing and use this momentum to progress further in the competition, with Chippa United confirmed as their next opponents in the last 16.
Don’t let them tell you that Kaizer Chiefs’ exit at the hands of Richards Bay was the biggest thing to happen in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.
There is the added incentive of competing in the Caf Confederations Cup tournament and be counted amongst Africa’s elite clubs.
It’s really nice to see Tassie being the talk of the town after so many years of showing potential as a versatile attacking threat.
A lot was said about young Tashreeq while he was an up-and-coming youth star at Ikamva while in the colours of Ajax Cape Town.
Everyone was looking forward to seeing the young striker blossom and follow in the footsteps of other top talents.
Look, it’s one thing to say a laaitie is good just because, but a lot was said about this guy in a generation of young talents that included guys like Abbubaker Mobara, goalkeeper Brandon Peterson, Olwethu Nguye, Haashim Domingo are some of the names that spring to mind.
There were many others obviously in that generation and they are all playing around the country at different levels.
That’s how this game is, some guys get lucky and reach great heights and some take a bit of time or even miss out or opportunities to progress for whatever reason.
I didn’t see Tassie slow down from that kid who had a killer instinct with that exciting 2013 Ajax team at the Bayhill, guided by then young and fresh Maahier Davids and David Kannemeyer.
He showed how dynamic he could be when he operated mainly as an attacking winger when he was promoted to the first team.
And then the injuries happened and you saw the skinny kid gain some extra weight and slowing down.
A lot was said about his personality being his main block to getting himself back to his best.
You would have thought working alongside a guy like veteran Nathan Paulse, who was known more for his commitment than his talent, would push Tassie, but for whatever reason it didn’t.
Ajax’s downfall meant Tassie would have to look for better opportunities and City decided to snatch him from their neighbours.
It has taken until now for the 26-year-old to make headlines.
That’s not to say he’s been bad all this time, hell no. The guy has been involved since joining City and has now truly given people something to talk about.
It must also be nice that all this is happening with guys he came up with such as Bara and Fagrie Lakay, who was at Santos back in their younger Bayhill days.
