So now that the ANC is getting serious about cleaning out its house, I want to propose that they use the opportunity to work on some really strict laws to safeguard future generations against the same thievery that we have had to live with.
It doesn’t even have to be particularly crazy, but just harsh enough to make those thinking about corruption, think twice.
The problem at the very top of government, is that legal fees are often taken care of by us.
So we are therefore double victims, having to pay for the legal defence of someone who stole our money.
It does so leave a bitter taste in the mouth.
Of course nobody wants an innocent person to come to financial ruin, after being forced to face an expensive court case to clear their name.
It’s if or when they are found guilty that I would want to see some harsh measures coming to bear on them.
What I am saying is, in addition to recouping the stolen monies, these guys should also be made to pay their own legal fees, if found guilty.
And it should be one of the conditions of their contracts, that the state will take care of their legal fees, only if they are found to be not guilty.
Lawyers, advocates and their counsel are so expensive that it would be a very good deterrent to begin with.
