Wow. So the SABC will be broadcasting Premier League football.
I almost got me excited for a moment when I got the news this week.
But then I realised that it’s not that awesome a development.
Sure it will be great for people without DSTv to watch those big-name Prem stars on our screens, but what about sport in our country?
It is the South African Broadcast Corporation after all.
But there is no cricket or rugby like in the old days.
The SABC still have no rights to show the people the Springboks taking on Argentina live.
Wouldn’t it be great if more of our 56 million mense got to see this transforming Bok team, led by Siya Kolisi, battle it out in Mendoza regstreeks?
Rather than showing the Prem, it’s more important to show us the Currie Cup. Or how about domestic cricket?
As a kid, I watched the old Benson and Hedges day-night series games and to this day, I still want to watch cricket. Any form of cricket - Test, ODI, T20.
There is so much of our local sport that needs exposure.
I also remember watching Wimbledon during winter school holidays and Formula One on sleepy Sunday afternoons - watching TopSport was great.
Now SABC sport is nearly non-existent. What they need to do is give the masses more football of the PSL variety.
And after the scare of losing even the rights to Bafana Bafana games earlier this month, they should up their game.
