So the Safa election drama ended with a whimper and there will be no change in leadership for the foreseeable future.
It looked like a war was
brewing between standing president Danny Jordaan and challenger Ace Ncobo.
Shots were fired from former referee Ncobo ahead of the March 24 election for a new leader for the national football association.
Ncobo blew the whistle on Safa’s mismanagement of funds, violating the electoral code and even revealed he was getting death threats in an explosive presser on Tuesday.
This after complaining to the Independent Electoral Committee (IEC), who then refused to oversee the poll at the weekend.
Ace even threatened to call Fifa to intervene and call off the election.
Well, yesterday (Thursday) morning, Fifa did step in. But the outcome wasn’t the one we expected as the world governing body’s representative called off the election and announced that Ncobo would not stand for president.
WITHDRAWN: Safa candidate Ace Ncobo
What an anticlimax.
But what does it all mean after seeing pictures of Ncobo and Danny hugging and shaking hands like ou tjommies without ‘n appeltjie to skil?
Fifa indicated that Safa will now confirm their electoral committee before an election can take place. The question now is whether Jordaan will have any opposition for the role.
With the likes of Tokyo Sexwale and Lucas Radebe already ruled ineligible for the presidency, there doesn’t seem to be anyone to stand in the way of the status quo.
