It’s rich that Saru are so desperate to get the SABC to get the Springboks’ games on the radio.
SA Rugby say they are trying to reach the masses, but the game has long become exclusive.
Since before the dawn of professionalism and huge TV deals with SuperSport, rugby has been narrow in its scope.
Only players from certain schools, picked to part of certain unions’ academies, not to mention skin colour, have been selected to play for the Bokke.
Size comes into, the overlooking of club structures and even the provincialism debate are just more ways of making rugby more and more exclusive.
So why now is reaching the masses such a big thing when the SABC don’t want to pick up the scraps?
And nogal on the radio? Please Saru. This ain’t 1979, it’s 2018.
Televised Springbok games are exclusively on SuperSport and if you’re lucky you can get a delayed broadcast if the manne who run the game are feeling inclusive.
Watching the Boks means you have to pay R789 per month for the right package.
The DSTV Compact deal, designed for low-income families – read people who are not white – don’t get the dedicated rugby and cricket channels.
Instead, they want people to listen on the radio as a handout from SuperSport and not see the game.
I’m sorry, I’m not going to sluk those pille.
If Saru want to spread the game and the rugby gospel, get MultiChoice to get the Bokke on the damn Compact deal if they don’t want to show live Bok games on SABC.
Get on the same page otherwise it’s like singing only the second half of the national anthem.
