Cape Town City have a second chance to prove they are heavy hitters in South African football in the MTN8 final on Saturday (7pm).
The club are in their third
season now and building a big reputation.
They famously won the Telkom Knockout - the first silverware for chairman John Comitis’ brainchild - at the very first time of asking in the 2016/ 2017
campaign.
But last season, they fell at the final hurdle against SuperSport United.
And this time around, coach Benni McCarthy and his manne have the opportunity to make things right.
In the Nelspruit showdown last September, the Citizens lacked the mental steel to get the job done.
After going a goal to the good, they failed to kill off Matsatsantsa in a period of dominance they should have taken advantage of.
Instead, the Citizens were forced by a 10-man opposition to extra time and eventually lost on penalties.
It was a massive blow to the side’s confidence and in the second half of the season, they saw their PSL title challenge fall apart as they finished fifth.
This time, Benni will be hopeful that his team is wiser, better
prepared and have an unshakeable will to win.
Comitis made a massive commitment to the squad in the last transfer window, bringing in top attacking talents like Tokelo Rantie and Gift Links.
And now you get the feeilng that they need to make this chance count and put Mother City football back on the map.
