Today is the day we find out who team No.16 in the PSL next season will be.
The playoffs come to a head this afternoon in Thohoyandou when Black Leopards take on Jomo Cosmos.
Lidoda Duvha are sitting pretty at the top of the standings with five points; they are three clear of Ezenkosi and Platinum Stars.
And victory today in front of their home fans in Venda would see them return to the top flight.
But should Cosmos pull off a win in tricky conditions, it would put a massive spanner in the works.
Jomo’s men still have one more game to play - against Stars on Saturday.
If they lose at Leopards, that game is a dead rubber.
But if they manage to win well then they will have their fate in their own hands because it would take them joint top of the table with five points.
If that’s the case, they will return to the top flight by beating Platinum Stars.
Roger de Sa’s men were given a lifeline in their hope for survival after the arbitration ruling against Ajax Cape Town.
Dikwena had been preparing for that chance to go to the playoffs even though many, myself included, thought they were being silly. They got the opportunity though.
But it didn’t seem to matter as they are still without a win in the tough playoffs.
This, for me, proves the point many have been raising and that is for teams who have consistently performed in an unforgiving NFD to not have to go to the playoffs.
Promote the top two straight and relegate the PSL’s bottom two straight.
Or increase the league to 18 teams and relegate three teams.
The NFD is much tougher than the top flight to crack with the decrease in money, the tougher travel - by bus for most - and so many other factors.
The playoffs have shown Dikwena flames and I think it has proved to all of us just how tough it would be for Cape Town’s Ajax to come straight back up, if their relegation holds up in all courts.
So it all comes down to today and I think Leopards, in the red dust of their Venda ground, will seal the deal and win promotion.
