Rugby Australia just shot themselves in the foot with the sacking of fullback Israel Folau.
Personally, I never thought I’d live to say the day when a rugby player gets his contract torn up because he quoted the Bible on a social media platform.
Religion, politics and sport don’t mix well, I’ve always said this.
You can add social media to the mix.
Anyway, good on Izzy for not giving in to the pressures of not sticking up for his beliefs.
And may he be blessed in whatever it is he is going to do next.
As for Rugby Australia, I believe they just kicked themselves in the backside by sacking the man.
Folau is the Wallabies’ star player and in a World Cup year, they certainly needed all the help they can get.
If the Aussies were to produce an upset by winning this year’s William Webb Ellis trophy, they needed Folau at the back of their line.
What’s more, I believe this whole scenario divided the Aussie camp.
A number of players already came out in support of the fullback, while others aren’t happy with his views.
I also believe there are players that wanted to support Folau, but were to scared of walking the same road as he did.
All I can say is that this world of ours has gone bonkers. Completely bonkers.
