Exactly when did the world go fully bonkers?
I remember a time, not too long ago, toe man nog man was en vrou nog vrou was and everyone was fine with that.
Now we are arguing about watse gender is jy – think Demi Lovato, who has come out as identifying as nonbinary, meaning she wants to be called they.
It’s confusing. It’s almost like whenever I think I’ve seen it all, our little earth and its inhabitants come along to say: “Check die een”.
Onto the sports field and controversy surrounding New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard.
Born Gavin Hubbard, the weightlifter “set New Zealand junior records in 1998 in the newly-established M105+ division with snatch 135kg, clean & jerk 170kg, total 300kg” according to a Wikipedia entry.
Maar dit lyk nie of dinge so lekker uitgewerk het as Gavin nie.
And now – years later – Hubbard is apparently op pad Tokyo toe for the Olympics… competing as Laurel in the women’s category.
I know.
Belgian weightlifter Anna Vanbellinghen, who will compete against Hubbard at the Olympics kan ook nie verstaan nie and was quoted earlier in the week as saying: “Anyone that has trained weightlifting at a high level knows this to be true in their bones: this particular situation is unfair to the sport and to the athletes.”
So Hubbard, who will compete in an event where strength is tested, is going to the Olympic Games while our own Caster Semenya is not allowed to compete because of her high natural testosterone level. Wat de hel gaan aan?
