No matter who you support in Super Rugby Unlocked, you have to feel for the teams that lose points because players in other teams test positive for Covid-19.
This week it was the turn of our own Stormers to pull the short end of the stick.
By now you probably know that their match against the Sharks was cancelled after the Durbanites had some positive coronavirus cases in their team.
I believe in a fair world and yes, in general this world is deeply unfair.
So when there is a chance to right certain wrongs by altering the rules, I feel it should be done.
And my friends over at the South African Rugby Union (Saru) have the perfect opportunity to start afresh when the Currie Cup kicks off next week.
We’ve seen how the guys in the UK approach this sort of thing. France were awarded a bonus-point win, nogal, against Fiji after the latter had players testing positive for their Autumn Nations Cup match last weekend.
That’s the model we should adopt in South Africa when our provinces go head to head in the oldest domestic competition in the world.
Not only will this ensure fairness, but I believe this will get players to be more cautious overall.
Saru CEO Jurie Roux appealed to the players in a statement on Tuesday, saying: “Players and management are urged to employ extreme caution in their social engagement.
“It only takes one careless interaction by a single player to have the knock-on effect that impacts on 45 other players, team managements, the schedule and potentially the destination of the title.”
And here’s the reason why I feel so bad for coach John Dobson and his Stormers – they’ve done all of that. The Stormers have been really cautious from the word go.
Dobson carefully planned for everything.
Those of you who really follow this team will know that they planned to have two groups – in case there is an infection in one. The plan was to rope in youngsters from U21 level if they had to – but play, they would play.
Anyway, no one can be blamed for the situation and I wish the players involved a speedy recovery.
But in terms of sport, I believe Roux and the decision makers will have to look at the rulebook again.
If it is a case of both teams having some positive cases in their squad, then split the log points.
If it’s only one team, then the Covid-free team should be awarded a bonus-point win.
That would have changed the dynamics a bit heading into the final weekend of Unlocked action.
Anyway, it’s almost time to dust off the old WP jersey. Stay safe people.
