There’s no denying it any more; the Springboks have a crisis at flyhalf.
Rich in talent in this position, it seems like our boys just can’t make that step up to become world-class flyhalves.
We’ve waited a long time for Handre Pollard to mature and become the flyhalf that he promised to be at a young age.
At 24, he has by no means reached his peak yet.
But after more than 30 caps, you’d expect South Africa’s first-choice 10 to be able to cut out the external pressures of the game and slot home an easy three-pointer from in front of the sticks.
So when Pollard lined up for that first shot at goal that would have opened the scoring in their 34-19 defeat to Argentina in Mendoza, we were all a bit nervous.
He had a horror day with the boot in Durban and despite practising his kicks during the week, missed an effort I am sure anyone else in the team probably would have goaled.
In a weekend when Beauden Barrett scored 30 points for the All Blacks on his own against Australia and Pollard’s direct opponent on Saturday, Nicholas Sanchez, also scored 17 of his team’s points, SA had a flyhalf that was clearly lacking confidence.
To top that, they didn’t have a suitable replacement for him on the bench.
And here you must blame coach Rassie Erasmus.
If the plan was to use Damian Willemse off the bench as a fullback, then the Boks should have had another seasoned flyhalf on the bench.
Pollard should have been subbed at half time.
His long-time deputy Elton Jantjies, though, wasn’t even on the bench, meaning the pressure was building on Pollard to get his game right.
It’s unfair on the player and again the finger needs to be pointed at Erasmus.
As it stands, South Africa’s two experienced flyhalves - Pollard and Jantjies - are short on confidence and seem to lack big-match temperament.
Third-choice Damian Willemse has not had enough game time at this level yet.
Sharks pivot Robert du Preez had one kick in a Bok jersey and kicked the game away against Wales in the US earlier this year.
In Cape Town, Jean-Luc du Plessis is again down with a hip injury.
Overseas we have options - but let’s not go there.
The problem facing Rassie now is that he has to drop Pollard for the next match against Australia.
If Jantjies was chucked to the wolves for a lack of BMT, then the same surely applies to Pollard.
Erasmus says he wanted to give players opportunities against the Wallabies in his post-match assessment, but that he can’t do that anymore because they lost to the Pumas.
I say now is the time to be brave, if you stick with the same players again and it doesn’t come off, fans might start losing faith in the Boks.
So will we see young Willemse in the Bok No.10 jumper against Australia in two weeks’ time?
PS: it’s tough at the top, isn’t it Rassie?
