Ajax Cape Town won the bragging rights in the cross-city rival clash against Steenberg United in a 2-1 win, while Cape Umoya United lost on the road in the past weekend’s Championship action.
The encounter had the makings of an interesting match-up as Ajax are known for their possession-based football style, while Steenberg employ a direct football strategy.
It would be the Urban Warriors that came out tops this time at Cape Town Stadium, after taking the lead early through a penalty.
But Steenberg equalised before half time.
Ajax, though, had enough in the tank to score the winner in the second half.
The Urban Warriors are now up to second place with 13 points after seven matches, Steenberg dropped down to 12th with six points on the board after six games.
Meanwhile, Cape Umoya’s visit to Giyani Stadium ended in a 1-0 defeat against Jomo Cosmos and the Capetonians remain mid-table at 10th with seven points after seven games.
Dominic Isaacs' side have a lot of ground to make up if they are to challenge for promotion.
