Welcome to Level 1 of the lockdown.
From today, we get to enjoy even more freedoms, thanks largely to the discipline we have all been showing over the last six months.
And with spring here, the renewed hope couldn’t come any sooner.
Sunrise is earlier every day and you can feel the days getting warmer and warmer as summer approaches.
I can’t imagine being in a hard lockdown during a Cape Town summer, so Level 1 is most welcome.
The cabin fever was starting to bite and I think we were all starting to feel the depression of being confined for fear of getting sick and dying.
But there are some cautionary tales from elsewhere in the world which we should heed, most notably from the USA and parts of Europe.
I think we can feel justifiably proud of the fact that, while many people have lost loved ones to Covid-19, we have done exceptionally well as a country; even better than developed countries which had a head-start dealing with the Coronavirus.
The great worry now is that we will drop the ball and be forced back into a higher level of lockdown again.
Personally, I am feeling a little less fearful these days, although I am a bit worried about foreign tourists bringing the virus back to our shores, should they visit over the holidays.
But I do have faith that our provincial leaders will pull out all the stops to screen everybody as they step off the planes.
As long as we continue sanitising and wearing our masks, then even if one does slip through, we should be safe.
