The warning lights will be flickering at Sir Lowrians Rugby Club by now after they lost 36-12 to Super League A newcomers Brackenfell last weekend.
The defeat, their sixth of the campaign in seven outings, has seen Errol Jaggers and his teammates slip to second-from-bottom on the log ahead of their match against a tough Durbell side at home on Saturday.
As for Brackenfell, who host Primrose this weekend, they look almost certain to survive the drop this season and is currently sitting comfortably in mid-table.
But the match of the weekend will take place at the Phillip Herbstein Stadium on Saturday, where the unbeaten hosts, False Bay, will square off against log leaders Hamiltons, also unbeaten.
With defending champions Maties being the only other side that hasn’t tasted defeat yet in the competition, after both False Bay and Hamiltons got the better of Tygerberg recently, this match can be seen as an early title knockout blow.
Both teams still have to play Maties, but will know that this encounter will determine the true title challengers.
It will be a match between two sides that play fairly similar - with a strong pack and flyhalves in Monty Dumond (Hamiltons) and Andri Claasen (False Bay) that have the ability to dictate the game with the boot.
They also have some decent pace out wide, with the likes of Danie Roux and Justin Fielies in the Bay camp, while Hammies have Earl Lewis and a player like Tsotso Mbovane in their ranks.
Hamiltons beat False Bay at home and away last season and of the upcoming clash, Hammies coach Anton Moolman says: “Over the last three seasons, the Bay and Hammies have had some titanic battles.
“It’s not going to be any different this weekend - both sides are still unbeaten.
“We’re playing away and they have a strong support at their home base, so we have to make sure we carry on the way we’ve been.”
While it is tight at the top of Super League A, it’s also becoming clear who the teams are that will be involved in the relegation tussle this year.
And in Bellville, two of those teams will cross swords at the University of the Western Cape.
The hosts, UWC, have only managed one win in five attempts, but will fancy their chances against the winless NNK - currently at the foot of the table.
A big win would lift Chester Williams’ students out of the bottom three, with Kuilsrivier having a bye this weekend.
