Two South Africans in the final at Wimbledon.
Let that sink in a bit.
Kevin Anderson (in single’s action) and Raven Klaasen (in doubles) have certainly done our country proud this past week or so.
They put tennis on the map again in South Africa.
We come from the same hood - Raven and I - and we used to hit a few balls together back in the day when I still fancied myself as a bit of a junior tennis player.
And that makes his success so much sweeter for me.
For Klaasen to reach his first Wimbledon final - and we all know this is any tennis player’s dream - at the age of 35 is simply remarkable.
It speaks to the will to win we have as South Africans. And while he didn’t quite get over the line next to New Zealand partner Michael Venus, South Africans will surely remember his effort.
That determination also reflected in Anderson’s game.
Having been down two sets to love against Roger Federer, he fought back to take one of the all-time greats to five sets. And then beat him - 13-11.
So when John Isner came around, we all expected a big-serving, tough-to-break encounter.
And that’s exactly what it turned out to be, with Anderson winning 26-24 to complete the second-longest game in Wimbledon history.
This column hit the printers before the result of his final showdown against Novak Djokovic was known.
Either way, I am proud to call myself a South African at the end of this year’s Wimbledon and it’s because of these two men.
