HIGH HOPES: Birds ace Zaphaniah Mbokoma HIGH HOPES: Birds ace Zaphaniah Mbokoma

.Zaphaniah Mbokoma is yearning to be back on the field and wrap up what was set to be an exciting finish to the GladAfrica Championship race for promotion

The Moroka Swallows midfielder is back home in Gugulethu following the training schedule prescribed by his club during the lockdown period.

And he tells the Daily Voice: “It’s not the same when you’re training because it seems there won’t be any matches any time soon.

“The problem is the way it all happened and we all just suddenly had to stop playing.”

Mbokoma previously worked with Birds coach Brandon Truter at Richards Bay, so the two Capetonians reunited at the Soweto club in January.

He adds: “It was my luck to land at a club in the running for promotion. That was the plan when I moved to Richards Bay as well, but things didn’t work out that way.

“I reached out to coach ‘Brakkies’ because I was clubless and he invited me over. We had our eyes on the league title and promotion straight without the playoffs.

“We were still going to play against the teams that we are competing with for promotion, so it’s all in our hands.”

Swallows are currently in second place, seven points behind Ajax Cape Town.
