The gravy train is not stopping at Sir Lowrians rugby club any more.
And now its commuters are looking for an alternative route.
Once known as a team filled with big stars such as Bolla Conradie and Earl Rose, Sir Lowrians, aka the Navy Train, has derailed a bit this year.
As much was evident in their 85-12 crash to False Bay, who were crowned champions of the Super League A last weekend.
Still, Sir Lowrians’ team sheet displayed some names that perhaps shouldn’t be on the receiving end of such a big hiding in the Western Province club scene.
Midfielder Berton Klaasen is one and then you also have talented flyhalf Errol Jaggers, 24.
Having represented Western Province throughout his school days at Paul Roos, Jaggers had a stint at the Lions before returning to play club rugby in Cape Town.
And he admits that this year, after moving from Helderberg two years ago, has been really tough for Sir Lowrians.
Having skills and a rugby CV second to none, Jaggers will be in demand during the off- season.
Of 2016 and his relegation-bound club, Jaggers says: “It’s really difficult. The guys are not coming to training sessions and we haven’t trained as much as we would’ve liked.”
Jaggers and his teammates still have a mathematical chance of survival in the top flight.
But they will need nothing short of a miracle.
This weekend they travel to Accordian Park where they will cross swords with speedster Joel Booysen and his Belhar teammates.
Coach Bronson Weir’s Belhar has not been at their best of late and will look to bounce back to winning ways after suffering a 43-25 defeat to Maties last weekend.
Belhar, although safe from relegation, won’t be happy with their current 10th place on the log and will no doubt look to hit one of the final nails in the coffin of Sir Lowrians.
This weekend sees a number of big matches taking place in Cape Town.
It’s the battle for second place that is turning out to be one of the more interesting ones as Tygerberg host Durbell at Florida Park, while Maties and Hamiltons will clash at the Danie Craven Stadium.
With not much to play for, champions False Bay will travel to Kuilsrivier, where they will be met by hosts determined not to go down.
