There is a direct correlation between speed and road deaths. The higher the driving speed, the greater chance of death. It’s common sense, but it cannot be said enough.
Conversely, being aware of speeds and going slower can have safety benefits. For instance, it is said just a 1km/h change in the average speed has huge safety benefits and slowing down from 120km/h to 119km/h can mean 3.8 percent less fatalities.
Bobby Nitro notices it’s not the guys who are really serious about their cars who are the danger, it’s the guys who recently acquired that Voora and are out to make a name. Research shows nearly all drivers have a much higher perception of their abilities than is actually the case, particularly men.
We men think we can drive much better than we can. And we fail to take into account it is often the other driver, the one we don’t see until it’s too late, causing the crash.
Even if you are the best driver, driving the top car, you cannot change how the people around you are going to behave. So if you are that one in a million person who never makes mistakes, don’t forget you still need to drive the same roads as the 999 999 people who do make mistakes.
So if you say, “I’m so used to speeding on this particular road, I know what I’m doing and it’s late at night anyway,” never forget there may be another less aware driver heading your way. Being a good driver in a great car doesn’t mean you can exceed the speed limit.
