The year’s first Street2Strip roars off on Saturday at Killarney as part of a three-way motoring bonanza that includes rallycross and national karting.
Something for everybody it seems, and all at the price of one ticket.
Outlaw racers love the streetwise feel of Robot Racing; the light goes green, and whoever gets to the end of the quarter-mile strip first is the winner. Then there’s the rush of the classic Christmas Tree start and the bragging rights of comparing times with your rivals.
There are no printed results; it’s all about pride and, more importantly, precision driving in a safe and controlled environment.
The event is also open, as a test session, to professional-level drag racers; spectators can get up close and personal with some of Cape Town’s fastest quarter-milers.
At the same time, just a few metres away, you can watch as local race and rally drivers get to grips (sort of) with one of the most demanding forms of motorsport: rallycross.
Then there’s National karting action all day, featuring some of South Africa’s finest young motorsport talent.
Gates open at 7 am on Saturday morning and racing starts at 10 am; entry is R80 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for kids under 12.
Street2Strip and Drag testing entries at Gate No.1 from 9 am to 12 pm at R100 for non-members and R80 for Club members.
