It’s a hot topic at the moment and Bobby Nitro hopes that more and more people are starting to become aware of the need to get more wys when it comes to staying safe on the roads.
Often, when we think of road safety, we think only of driving, but the fact is that many of the deaths on our roads are pedestrians. As with drivers, pedestrians too are responsible for seeing and being seen.
So if you’re out there and walking, know that you are vulnerable and there are some basic good practices to be aware of. Remember that the change begins with you.
First off, make sure you’re easy to see. Wear bright clothing and dress your kids in bright stuff, or buy them some ( lekker cheap) glow-sticks because kids love them.
Another thing you can do is carry a torch at night or use your cellphone light to make it easier for drivers to see you when crossing the road.
Make a big effort to use the dedicated spaces for crossing roads, like the bridges on the national roads or pedestrian crossings. Drivers should be more alert for people crossing here.
When you are crossing the street, try to make eye contact with the driver. Ek sien jou is the idea here and don’t assume the driver can sommer see you. If he’s fiddling with his phone, shake your head but do it nicely.
Lastly, obey the robots. The little red man not only means you should stop, it also means cars coming at right angles can just go. So they won’t be expecting you when you step of the kerb. Much wiser to wait for the little green man!
