This year, for many, is turning out to be even harder than last year, as people’s last resources run out after job layoffs and businesses sukkel. Never has there been a more vital time for those who can help, to help.
And when that help can be spread to many people, all the better. Here’s a heartwarming and tummy-filling story.
It all started when Ricky Hendricks saw an appeal on Facebook, from a struggling mother in Manenberg asking for food and clothing after losing her job.
A DJ with a business, Ricky thought to himself ‘why help one person, when we can try to bring help to many’, so he made some calls. First call went out to Vincent. Vinny and the Cape Crews Movement have a knack for pulling together the right people at the right time.
The two of them made some more calls, reaching out to people they know, to put together an outreach. Simply put, put many caring people together and they can accomplish so much more than one.
So DJ Ricky and the Cape Crews Movement, together with Daredevil Entertainment and Exclusive Sound with DJ Ricky, VW Outlaws and Ford Addikts, hosted a Manenberg Outreach event.
Vinny says: “We kept it under cover, didn’t tell many people, as we wanted it to be a surprise. So when we came rolling down the street people were blown away. Then we set up the sound rig, the cars pulled in, the tables came out with food and drink and there were smiles all round.”
DJ Ricky adds: “The day itself went off really well. We had gotten messages saying we should be careful in Manenberg, as it is a red zone, but we thought let’s do it, and just take precautions. So we notified authorities and even got neighbourhood watch in to help manage the kids and social distancing.”
So ja, there’s no time to make a big show, it’s exactly these kinds of small events that get right into the heart of our communities, that can brighten up a child’s day with a full tummy, and let families know that despite their hardship, there are those moments when you can feel connected to and supported by your community. Without each other we are lost.
