The family car variety has received a new boost with the local release of the Audi RS5 Quattro, with a bi-turbo 2.9 litre V6 powerplant that throws down 331kW, making it a dad mobile to be seriously reckoned with.
From zero to 110km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds, the RS5 looks the part with a honeycomb grille, an RS diffuser at the rear, spoiler lip, 20-inch wheels and oval tailpipes.
What’s interesting is that this engine is paired with an eight-speed auto transmission, succeeds what could reliably be called the naturally aspirated engine of the last decade, the 4.2-litre V8 that previous incarnations housed.
Interior is super smart but not overstated, except maybe for the LED light guides on the contours of the door and centre console, in 30 different colours, nogal, if you tick that option. RS Sport seats are adjusted electrically and covered in nappa leather. The virtual cockpit is standard, as is the 21cm infotainment system.
Most test drives took place on twisty mountain passes, which is really the place you want to be driving such a tourer, and with it’s 40:60 front to rear split of power to four wheels is definitely a road hugger. Pricing starts at R1 285 550.
