Besides the obvious safety measures, like making sure your kids are buckled up, and setting a good example around basic safety measures, what else can we as a community do to keep our kids safe on the roads?
It’s a question worth asking as not only are they the most vulnerable members of our society, but they will also carry forward, to the next generation, lessons learned from us.
Visibility on the roads is key, especially for child pedestrians, so make sure they are wearing bright clothing, especially around sunset when visibility is at its lowest.
Here’s another obvious one: cellphones.
The tech is an integral part of our lives, we’re all excitedly connected to phones, but we still need to learn good phone manners.
It’s a phenomenon we need to figure out, the way so many people have got this divided attention thing going on nowadays, talking with you and scanning their phone at the same time.
Thing is, it’s rude socially but downright life-threatening on the roads.
Not texting while driving is a no-brainer, but what about texting while walking? So many kids do it, and it makes it easier to just step off the kerb into an oncoming car. Again, if nobody tells that kid it’s dangerous, nothing changes.
If someone does, it might just get safer out there. What can you do this week to create safer cellphone use this week?
The change begins with you.
