When it comes to keeping safe, top of the list are kids. Here are some tips to ensure your child does not become a statistic.
Talk to them: Every journey is a learning experience, so talk to your kids about road signs, tell them what is safe behaviour and what is not.
- Live by example: Your kids are always watching you and copying your behaviour, so set a good example. Cross the road in safe places, obey traffic signs, be a patient driver.
- Walk safe: Hold your child’s hand when crossing the road and tell them why you’re doing so. Practice stop, look, listen and think before crossing.
- Kerb-side: Get your kids in and out the car on the kerb side door. It’s just safer.
- Vulnerable spaces: Driveways can be particularly dodgy, especially since we think they are safe because they are familiar. Kids move quickly, so always make sure your kids know to stay out of the way around driveways.
- School rules: Drop-off times can be chaotic.
Be extra aware, as a driver, for kids dashing out from behind parked cars. When kids are late for school their road safety habits seem to go out the window, so as drivers we need to be extra careful.
Always remember that change begins with you. Children will follow your example.
