While taking a moment to think about the safety of pedestrians, Bobby Nitro decided to reflect on the figures. Taking a look at the data, it quickly emerges just who is in the greatest danger of being killed while out walking.
According to the Provincial Department of Transport and Public Works’ Safely Home campaign, 61% of pedestrian fatalities tested for alcohol were found to have been drinking (blood alcohol level positive), and 41% had a BAC higher than 0.2. That’s four times the legal driving limit.
And there’s a leaning towards males, who are more likely to be impaired than females. And the highest risk group is between the ages of 20 and 29, with coloured pedestrians in the highest numbers. Three times as many pedestrians die on Saturdays than on Wednesdays.
Basically, getting gesuip and walking the streets could result in death. So, if you are out on Saturday after having a few dops, beware.
Rather leave the rondloop to another day.
