There are certain facts that are important to have a thorough appreciation for, if you are to use a car on the road.
Basic things, like good tyres, working brakes and engine, these we appreciate as must-haves on the road. But these are just the basics, there is so much more to take regard of if we are to make our roads safer.
Wearing a seatbelt for instance; if you are in a crash, and you’re not wearing your seatbelt, you might as well have no brakes on your car. The result is the same - human beings get killed. You would be plain dom to drive without brakes, right? Same with a seatbelt.
Another thing many people don’t know, is that without a seatbelt you have no case with the Road Accident Fund, so if you do happen to survive, the costs will kill you.
Some people will share stories of when not wearing a seatbelt saved a life, but surely that’s no example to follow. At best, it’s an unlikely exaggeration; at worst, it encourages dangerous behaviour. Don’t listen to them. Evidence reflects that buckling up reduces the risk of death in a crash by 50%.
It makes not an ounce of difference if you don’t make the effort.
The change begins with you.
