Vegetables, whether you love it or hate it, at some point you will have to eat it!
As a kid, for some of us, our experience with veggies was either good or very, very bad.
Whether you ate yours with a smile or had it forced down your throat every night at supper time, this is one food group we simply cannot escape.
Monday, 17 June was Eat Your Vegetable Day, a day to celebrate all things bright, beautiful and sometimes delicious about our favourite veg.
This also proves that there really is a day for alle s!
Although the name says it all, the day is not just about eating vegetables, it’s also about raising awareness about its diversity and, of course, the health and nutritional benefits.
With so many South Africans adopting a healthier lifestyle and better eating habits, it’s only fitting that we set aside at least one day to enjoy a healthy meal.
Their versatility is what makes veggies a great addition to meals, from carrots to beetroot and green beans or even those bright red, green and yellow “robot” peppers.
And what’s a Sunday lunch without golden brown roast potatoes?
Vegetable bakes have also become very popular, and it’s a tasty way to get your kids to eat it, camouflaged with cheese and meat.
And you can score a bargain when buying your vegetables fresh and in season.
There’s also the option of growing your own.
With the skyrocketing prices of everything, more people are growing their own veggies.
In celebration of Eat Your Vegetable Day, let’s all make a conscious effort to include more of the good stuff in our daily meals.
